Finally after a long wait spanning decades, the construction work of the second phase of NH-66 Bypass from Mukkola to Karode on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border has started.<\/p>\n
All the hurdles related to land acquisition are being cleared and the preliminary works, including clearing the land and cutting down of trees, started a week ago. The construction work of the second phase is awarded to L&T.<\/p>\n
Unlike the widening works of Phase-1, Highway authority will have to begin from scratch here. They need to construct a 45-metre wide road with service roads and median in the densely populated region covering 16.5 kms. Another interesting fact is that the stretch from Mukkola to Karode will be developed as a cement concrete pavement, making it the first \u2018white road\u2019 in the state.<\/p>\n

Land Acquisition<\/h3>\n
Around 91% of the land acquisition process has been completed and the remaining acquisition works in the five villages, will be carried out after the compensation is handed out by the Deputy Collector (Land Acquisition). It is reported that the rest of the remaining portions to be acquired are caught in legal battle and NHAI will have to approach the court and deposit the compensation amount to complete the acquisition process. However, highway authority has said that it is not a serious issue.<\/p>\n
Flyovers & underpasses<\/h3>\n
Three flyovers and four underpasses are proposed to be built on the stretch. Flyovers will be built at Marappalam, Kottukunnam-Pottayilkada and Kaduvakuzhi-Chenkavila road on the Kerala-TN border. Under-passes will be constructed on Punnakulam-Chappath road, Kazhivoor road, Pazhayakada-Plamootukada road and at Kottukal.<\/p>\n
Once the works in both sides of the states are completed, Trivandrum and Kanya-kumari will be connected by a single stretch. The Vizhinjam container terminal will benefit from this stretch as container movement would become easier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
