These are some of the places in and around Trivandrum where you could go early in the morning and still get back home in time for dinner. And a couple of places which you could stay over, if needed.<\/p>\n

1. Kappil-Varkala<\/h3>\n

Kappil-Varkala road is a very picturesque location to enjoy your evening. Have an early lunch and drive down to Kappil so that you reach the place by around 4pm. The road to Kappil \u2013 with the sea on one side and the lake on the other, will make you feel like heaven on earth. This beautiful getaway offer serenity at its best and the oh-so-mesmerising view is something that will stay with you for lifetime. You can either see the sunset at Kappil or drive down to Varkala which is only 7km away. Have dinner from one of the many joints on the cliffs and head back home.<\/p>\n

2. Ponmudi<\/h3>\n

Ponmudi is the best destination to go, if you wish to enjoy natural beauty, peacefulness, and total relaxation. It offers a \u2018nature centric do-nothing\u2019 getaway for anyone to feel relaxed and rejuvenated.\u00a0 The narrow winding road offering scenic views of tea and rubber plantations is perfect if you like driving through the country side on a lazy afternoon. There are 22 hairpin curves in the short route which makes the travel a definitely thrilling experience. The best time to visit Ponmudi is either early morning or in the evening.<\/p>\n

Lying in the lap of the Agasthyakoodam hill range in the Western Ghats and located towards the east of Trivandrum, is Kottur. Visitors to Kottur forest area are allowed to proceed some 1.5 kms beyond the forest check post, which would end at a watchtower. The view from the watchtower at Kottur is an enchanting one with splendid views of the peaks of Thottumpara, Kathirumudi, Agasthyakoodam, Pandipathu and even Ponmudi. At Kottur, visitors can have a close interaction with the elephants at the elephant rehabilitation centre at the nearby Kappukad. Elephant safari is also possible here from 11am-5pm. The safari is of twenty minutes duration at Rs.100 per person.<\/p>\n

Poovar is a beautiful coastal village in Trivandrum embraced by lovely beach on one side and backwaters on the other making it alluringly beautiful. The place is very popular for its picturesque beauty and serene environment. Fringed by coconut trees on all sides, it is an ideal place for tourists who want to have an outing. The main attractions at Poovar are the backwaters, mangroves, estuary, golden sand beach, exotic resorts, floating restaurants and the wide variety of birds. You can also indulge in various activities such as boating, elephant rides, exploring the mangroves and the estuary, bird watching, and photography.<\/p>\n

A beautiful lake and a picturesque dam site, Neyyar is the heaven for tourists who search for some serenity and isolation. Home to unique species of flora and fauna, Neyyar is truly a nature lover\u2019s paradise. Nature lovers can walk through it, which is a better way to experience the forest than via jeep safaris. Visitors can do easy hikes along the foothills, or a tougher climb up to some dizzying heights. The sanctuary is open throughout the year. November to March is the most pleasant time to visit. June to October brings heavy rain which makes trekking plans unpredictable. The major tourist attraction near Neyyar Dam is its wildlife sanctuaries which comprises of Lion Safari Park, Crocodile Park and a Deer Park.<\/p>\n

Thenmala is part of Chenduruny wildlife sanctuary which is spread over 100 square kilometres. At the centre of the sanctuary is the lake formed by the Thenmala irrigation dam built across Kallar River. Thenmala’s Ecotourism Project is a unique destination from a visitor’s point of view. It has equal opportunities for fun, adventure and leisure. The project area currently has three major zones viz. Culture Zone, Leisure Zone and Adventure Zone. Once can indulge in many activities such as river crossing, tree climbing, or trekking etc. The unique attraction of Thenmala is its elevated walkway which will take you through the canopy of trees. You can also visit the Palaruvi waterfalls which is a major tourist attraction nearby.<\/p>\n

7. Mankayam Waterfalls<\/h3>\n

Mankayam Waterfalls is situated near Palode, about 50kms away from the city.\u00a0 This water spectacle can be enjoyed at any time of the year. With rich forest setting, the area in and around the waterfalls are overwhelmingly green. Rising from the hill ranges of Chemunchi, the River Chittar, flowing down through the forests of Brymore creates a tributary in the form of Mankayam River. The Mankayam River in its course further down, produces two spectacular waterfalls- Kalakayam, which is one of the biggest waterfalls in the area and the other at Kurissadi. The Kuridsadi Ghat offers an excellent spot for bathing.<\/p>\n

Kanyakumari needs no introduction. Sunsets and sunrises are what Kanyakumari is famous for. Make sure you start early so as to beat the heat. Visit Sucheendram temple if you are religious or make a trip to the Vivekananda Rock on a boat. Maybe on the way back you can visit the Padmanabhapuram Palace which used to be the capital of Travancore before they moved to Trivandrum.<\/p>\n

Gavi is a quiet, beautiful and pristine forest haven spread across the beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve.
