The Transport Commissioner had announced that oil majors would not give petrol from August 1 to motorcyclists who did not wear helmets in the three cities. The objective of the campaign is to enforce the use of the helmet by motorcyclists. The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has roped in four oil majors to enforce helmet for two-wheeler riders in view of the mounting fatal accidents involving motorcyclists.<\/p>\n
MVS has deployed enforcement squads and field officers at petrol pumps distribute leaflets on the need to wear the helmet and advise those reaching petrol pumps without the headgear to use it. The motorcyclists wearing helmets and filling petrol from the pumps will get coupons for a monthly lucky draw. Those flouting the rules after two weeks would be booked. Penalty ranging from Rs.100 to Rs.1,000 could be imposed on offenders.<\/p>\n

The decision is in the wake of the death of 1,330 motorcyclists in 14,482 road accidents in the State in 2015. As much as 80% of the deaths were due to head injuries and helmet could have saved some of these lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
