Kerala has the high toilet coverage in the country with 97% and the aim is now to cover the rest of the three per cent. As part of the program, Kerala has constructed more than 1.90 lakh toilets across the 941 grama panchayats in the state. Toilets were constructed at critically challenged and hilly terrains. Also, the mobilisation of resources was a challenge, especially in tribal, hilly and coastal areas.<\/p>\n

Suchitwa Mission, the nodal agency for sanitation, which is implementing the initiative said work on 35% of the toilets had already been completed and Kerala would achieve the new milestone of 100% Open Defecation Free status by November. The mission is constituted under the state, local self-government, and other departments with an aim of creating a waste-free Kerala with a pollution-free environment, public hygiene, and cleanliness.<\/p>\n
