The state cabinet has decided to register criminal charge if state highways or other main roads are found dug up without permission. The State Highway Protection Act, the law which meant to safeguard highways will be strictly implemented by the government.<\/p>\n
The decision comes in the wake of reports of rampant road digging by KSEB, Kerala Water Authority, Telephone service providers, etc without obtaining permission<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
According to State Highway Protection Act of 1999<\/strong>, the executive engineer concerned can approach police against those damaging roads. Based on this, the police can initiate further action. Also, there is a provision in the Act to levy penalty. That’s not all. Under the act, criminal charges can be booked against those who encroaching the roads.<\/p>\n
An order declaring important roads as state highways will be issued soon as part of ensuring safe travel along roads. Thus more roads will come under the label of state highway.<\/p>\n

The road protection act also allows PWD Roads Section executive engineer to approach the police if portions of a state highway or main roads are found dug up. If National Highway is found damaged, the National Highway Roads Section engineer can lodge a complaint.<\/p>\n
