The civic body also needs to build around 70 public toilets to ensure proper coverage across the wards. Corporation along with Kudumbasree had conducted door-to-door surveys across the city to collect data on households without toilets.<\/p>\n<p>The civic body has started an Open defecation-free cell to coordinate and monitor activities which are partially funded under the Swachh Bharat programme. According to the sources, households that are concentrated in the coastal regions and houses in the slums are not having toilet facility. However, in the slum areas, considerable progress has been achieved in recent years as community toilets have been constructed as part of the various urban housing initiatives under Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) and the Rajiv Awaaz Yojana (RAY) projects.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Capital city currently has only \u00a039 public toilets and 8\u00a0community toilets. Most of these are in a bad condition and need urgent maintenance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A sum of Rs.15,400 will be provided to each beneficiary to build toilets. Out of this, the Corporation provides Rs.10,067; the Central government, Rs.4,000, and the State government pays Rs.1,333.<\/p>\n<p>So far Civic body has constructed two public toilets &#8211; one near the Vizhinjam harbour and the other, at Kottappuram with the help of Adani Ports Ltd., as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. These will be inaugurated soon. Capital city currently has only \u00a039 public toilets and 8\u00a0community toilets.
