Soon, the Department of inland navigation will undertake the task of cleaning of polluted Parvathy Puthanar Canal and will re-establish the age old navigation path along the canal.<\/p>\n
The plan is to build a navigation channel connecting Kovalam to Akkulam which will open up Akkulam backwaters. The ambitious project is estimated to cost Rs.50 crore. Department of inland navigation is likely to go for tenders in a month. The work is expected to be completed in two years.<\/p>\n
When the new waterway is completed, it will become a hot tourism circuit in Trivandrum since it links two famous tourist destinations in the capital.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The navigation channel will have a distance of\u00a016km and at a depth of 2.2m.\u00a0 In many places, the depth has been significantly reduced due to years of neglecting and sewage disposal. The new sewage lines will be laid and some residents will be rehabilitated to make land for sewage lines. At present, there is no land available to lay the sewage line. For this, an additional sum of Rs 4.5 crore will be utilized. To protect the banks, pre-cast vertical slab piles will be installed on either side.<\/p>\n
In 2015, a distance of 10 kilometres of the canal was cleaned spending Rs 68 lakhs. However, a year later the canal continues to be littered. It is reported that around 750 houses situated on the banks of the canal dump sewage directly into the canal. With the new sewage line in place, this practice can be stopped.<\/p>\n

It is said that Parvathy Puthanar has a unique design which enables itself to flush out water naturally using the sea water during heavy rainfall. However, it was not designed to handle huge quantities of sludge and other types of waste.<\/p>\n
