{"id":27159,"date":"2016-10-20T13:45:15","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T08:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/?p=27159"},"modified":"2016-10-20T13:45:15","modified_gmt":"2016-10-20T08:15:15","slug":"trivandrum-declared-open-defecation-free-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/trivandrum-declared-open-defecation-free-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Trivandrum Declared as an \u2018Open Defecation-Free\u2019 City!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Kerala is moving towards Open defecation free state, its capital, Trivandrum\u00a0 was declared an open defecation free district.<\/p>\n<p>The formal announcement was made by Power and Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran at a function held at the Collectorate.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent survey conducted by the Trivandrum Corporation, there were 3,250 houses without toilets. Now that gap has been filled. Earlier, corporation along with Kudumbasree had conducted door-to-door surveys across the city to collect data on households without toilets. A sum of Rs.15,400 was provided to each beneficiary to build toilets. Out of this, the Corporation provides Rs.10,067; the Central government, Rs.4,000, and the State government pays Rs.1,333.<\/p>\n<p>The rural areas in Parassala, Perukadavila, Athiyanoor, Nemom, Vellanad, Nedumangad, Vamanapuram, Kilimanoor, Chirayinkeezhu, Varkala and Pothencode achieved the target of constructing 14,211 toilets which consist of 11 block panchayats and 73 gram panchayats.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Kerala will be declared an open defecation-free state on November 1. The urban areas will be declared open defecation-free by March next year. This includes the challenge of building toilets in coastal, high range and swampy areas which are not favourable to construct toilets.<\/p>\n<p>However, public urination continues to be a problem in the state and Kerala needs more public toilets to put an end to public urination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the Kerala is moving towards Open defecation free state, its capital, Trivandrum\u00a0 was declared an open defecation free district.
