Strengthening Works to Begin Soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The renovation works on the Valiyathura pier which was proposed last year is progressing. The project is aimed at creating a new tourists spot and also to increase the structural rigidness of the pier.<\/p>\n<p>The Ports Department is currently searching for a company which can take up the complicated work of strengthening the pier. An expression of interest was called in September by the Ports Department for the strengthening works and have now extended the dates.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Currently the bridge is in a dilapidated condition and has been closed many times in the recent past due to safety concerns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Strengthening the entire structure is not an easy job and the works include replacing of the beams that have fallen off and strengthening of the weaker parts of the structure. For this, methods like grunting are used, in which a mixture of cement and sand are sprayed onto the structure under high pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the bridge is in a dilapidated condition and has been closed many times in the recent past due to safety concerns. At present, the authorities are installing safety handrails across the full length of the bridge and also some concreting work on the top of the pier. The work is expected to finish in three months. The whole project costs Rs.1.04 crore.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2015 a Rs19.5 crore plan was formulated to restore the pier to its former glory. The project also includes providing basic amenities for the tourists arriving at the place, a waiting shed, a cloakroom, toilet facilities, ticket counters and a cafeteria. The pier will also have park benches for the visitors to enjoy the sunset and sea view.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When the renovation project becomes completed it will become another hangout place for Trivandrumites who want to enjoy their evening.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Valiyathura pier which has a length of 214 meters was inaugurated on September 10, 1956, and had celebrated its 58th-anniversary last year. The existing pier was built to replace the old pier which was destroyed when a steamship, SS Pandit, rammed on it on November 23, 1947. Valiyathura Pier that was once a bustling port used to bring in goods to Trivandrum is now a lonely spot often enjoyed by Trivandrumites who come to the Shangumukham beach.<\/p>\n<p>When the renovation project becomes completed it will become another hangout place for Trivandrumites who want to enjoy their evening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The renovation works on the Valiyathura pier which was proposed last year is progressing.
