India’s first LNG-driven (liquefied natural gas) bus will be launched in Trivandrum today accelerating the move towards clean fuel. LNG driven buses will be launched at the meeting of the empowered Group of State Transport Ministers (GoMs) at Hotel Mascot here.<\/p>\n

The LNG-driven bus is being launched as part of a plan of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to use the imported LNG directly for mass transportation and to reduce carbon emissions.\u00a0Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the meeting at Hotel Mascot here. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan will preside.<\/p>\n

For LNG buses imported tanks are being used in the bus by Tata. As it is a pilot project, the LNG-driven bus will run on a trial basis for three months.<\/p>\n

However, commercial operations can only start after the MORTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) issues notification for using the LNG as fuel.\u00a0 The draft has been published and the MORTH is waiting for the mandatory period given to file objections.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, South India’s first LNG Receiving, Regasification, and Reloading Terminal with a capacity of 5 MMTPA is coming up at the Special Economic Zone of Puthuvype in Kochi.<\/p>\n

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that India will more than double its capacity to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) to 50 million ton a year in the next few years from 21 million ton at present in a bid to promote the use of the clean fuel and help reduce carbon emissions. \u00a0Using imported LNG directly for transportation helps in saving the cost of re-gasifying the liquid fuel shipped to India in tankers.<\/p>\n

The government had already announced that it was planning to use LNG, which is cheaper than diesel, as a fuel for Railways and long-haul transportation. The KSRTC, which has a fleet of 6,000 buses, had already announced plans to use natural gas.<\/p>\n
