R. Krishnan Nair’s book is indeed a rare gem. The book is probably the first of its kind in India as it details about trees from their evolution to their multifarious utility to some of the most engrossing stories.

‘’To primitive man, trees symbolized life, regeneration, strength, solace, food, security, and sanctuary. For ancient man, trees were objects of wonder. The mystery of their growth from tiny seeds to lofty trees, the movement of their leaves and branches, the way they seem to die (the deciduous trees when they shed their leaves) and come to life again with new flush of leaves – all these happenings appeared as miracles,’’ Krishnan Nair says in the introduction to his work.

The book tells us about the forgotten history, little known yet illuminating information, and long forgotten yet intriguing tales regarding trees. For example, the place ‘Palashi’ in West Bengal where Battle of Plassey took place got its name from the Bengali word for the red flower Pôlash or known as Butea monosperma.

This book is for those who want to learn about the closest and oldest relationships in nature how trees have supported human race, and the tales and secrets they hold, and its impact on our history and beliefs.
