The process of fixing of boundaries of the canal has commenced last Tuesday.

Surveying of the area coming under the Muttathara village has started with the identification of survey stones near the Ponnara Bridge. The survey will be undertaken in six villages i.e Muttathara, Kadakampally, Pettah, Attipra, Menamkulam, and Veiloor villages. The fixing of boundaries will be carried out along the 16-km stretch of the canal from Kovalam to Akkulam.

When the new waterway is completed, it will become a hot tourism circuit in Trivandrum since it links two famous tourist destinations in the capital.

Survey will also identify ‘param boke’ land and will also enable authorities to detect encroachments on the canal. The survey is set to be completed before November 30. However, the shortage of workers may make it impossible to meet the target. Currently, only four surveyors have been deployed for the work. Authorities have requested the services of 15 surveyors and five helpers, divided into three teams to speed up the survey process.

The plan is to build a navigation channel connecting Kovalam to Akkulam which will open up Akkulam backwaters. The canal will be cleaned, dredged and will be made navigable for cruise operations from Trivandrum International Airport to Kovalam. The ambitious project is estimated to cost Rs.50 crore. It will be also be connected to the Kollam-Kottapuram National Waterway-3 as an extension.

The canal will be cleaned, dredged and will be made navigable for cruise operations from Trivandrum International Airport to Kovalam.

The navigation channel will have a distance of 16km and at a depth of 2.2m. In many places, the depth has been significantly reduced due to years of neglecting and sewage disposal. It is reported that around 750 houses situated on the banks of the canal dump sewage directly into the canal. To prevent this new sewage pipelines have to be installed.

It is said that Parvathy Puthanar has a unique design which enables itself to flush out water naturally using the sea water during heavy rainfall. However, it was not designed to handle huge quantities of sludge and other types of waste.

When the new waterway is completed, it will become a hot tourism circuit in Trivandrum since it links two famous tourist destinations in the capital.

The works to make the Parvathy Puthanar navigable again has finally started.
