After a halt of two weeks, the second phase of the NH-Bypass from Kukkola to Karode resumed as Action Council has temporarily called off the\u00a0agitation\u00a0following a meeting with district administration.<\/p>\n
Road widening works in Mukkola-Karode stretch were resumed after 15 days on Friday. The work on the stretch passing through Kottukal, Kanjiramkulam, Thirupuram, Chenkal, and Karode has been suspended by the EPC contractor, L&T Construction owing to protest from action council demanding better compensation for people in five villages alongside the Mukkola-Karode stretch on May 11. The widening works were halted as protestors obstructed workers from carrying out construction activities.<\/p>\n

“As a first step, the district administration has informed around 100 petitioners that their cases will be taken up on May 31. We had demanded a compensation which is 30% more than the market value and interest. The district administration has asked us to submit our demands to the arbitrator,<\/em>” said V Sudhakaran, chairman of the action council to Times of India.<\/p>\n
NHAI have to pay a sum of Rs.20lakh per day to the contractor for not being able to execute the work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
People residing in these 5 villages demand that NHAI should treat these five villages as one village and for each set of plots falling under a category, the same price should be given as compensation. Other demands from the action council include compensation as given for the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila NH 66; 14% interest for delay in compensation and rehabilitation for those who lost jobs and rendered homeless.<\/p>\n
As per records, 67 hectares of the 70 hectares of private land needed for the Reach II from Mukkola was acquired under the NH Act, 1966. NHAI has provided a sum of Rs462 crore to the State and the Deputy Collector (LA) had disbursed \u20b9445 crore to those who had surrendered land. Three hectares have to be further acquired on the stretch.<\/p>\n
