In the first phase of the project, a berth of 800 metres length and 60 meters\u2019 width will be constructed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Berth can dock even the largest Ships in the world<\/h2>\n<p>The birth will be able to accommodate even the largest container ships in the world, according to official sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The berths are designed to accommodate two of the largest mother vessels available today. The largest are around 400 metres with a capacity of 19,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit or the size of a standard cargo container). But the berths at Vizhinjam are designed to cater to vessels of up to 24,000 TEU<\/em>,\u201d K Jayakumar, CEO of Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL), the state government firm supervising the project, said to Indian Express.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Super-post-Panamax cranes, the biggest of their kind in the world today!<\/h3>\n<p>It will come up on the seaward side of the land reclaimed for the project. It is on these berths that the super-post-Panamax cranes, the biggest of their kind in the world today, would be deployed. Container yards and other facilities will also be constructed on this reclaimed land.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">It is an Engineering Marvel in every sense!<\/h3>\n<p>According to the port officials, the berths itself is an engineering marvel as the engineers need to pile to a depth of 30-40 metres below the seabed.<\/p>\n<p>The whole Vizhinjam project will be completed in four phases. Phase one includes construction of the 3.1 km breakwater, dredging and reclamation works and the construction of 800 metres of berths. Now that the monsoon has started, the focus of construction will now shift to constructing the berth and breakwater construction will shift to a low gear due to the monsoon.
