Governor\u00a0P Sathasivam Inaugurated the state-level environment day celebrations by planting a sapling at the Nishagandhi Auditorium grounds here at 10.30am.<\/p>\n

The saplings, being kept at around 100 nurseries across the state, will be distributed free of cost to various organisations. The local self-governing institution, government institutions, schools, colleges, youth, religious and voluntary organisations can collect their share of saplings from these nurseries.<\/p>\n

Distribution of free saplings\u00a0is only available for organisations. However, individuals who wish to get them should approach the local bodies, which will get 2,500 saplings each.<\/p>\n
Forest Department will only distribute saplings of local fruit trees and those of medicinal value through its nurseries. The project is executed under the Haritha Keralam Mission by the Kerala Government. “The department, will in no way, promote the planting of Acacia, <\/em>Mangium, Eucalyptus or Grandis during this campaign or in future<\/em>,” said Forest Minister K Raju.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnlike the previous years, the department has also put in place a monitoring mechanism to ensure that the planted saplings are protected and nurtured. Besides, the public is now aware of the need to protect nature, which will help to achieve the desired results<\/em>,” the minister added.<\/p>\n
A bicycle rally, seminar, documentary screening and quiz competition will be organised as part of the programme. Also, programmes will be organised in all districts, which will be attended by ministers, MLAs, MPs and other people’s representatives.<\/p>\n
