The alignment of the proposed 656.5-km Coastal Highway that will\u00a0go through nine districts in the state was approved by the state government.<\/p>\n
The approval came after the report of the Chief Engineer (National Highways), PWD, that the alignment submitted by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) is \u2018feasible\u2019. Approval of the alignment has been notified by the government and has given the green signal to take the project forward. The funds are to be mobilised from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).<\/p>\n
The 656 Km long highway will start from Poovar in Trivandrum and ends in Kunjathoor near Thalapady in Kasaragod.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The 656 Km long highway will start from Poovar in Trivandrum and ends in Kunjathoor near Thalapady in Kasaragod. The new highway will improve the road connectivity in the state especially in the coastal belt. The road will pass through nine district that is Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts.<\/p>\n

PWD will prepare a Detail Project Report (DPR) soon even though Natpac had expressed its willingness to undertake the work. The urgency of executing the project is one of the reasons for the PWD preparing the DPR. Meanwhile, KIIFB has initiated steps to bring in Non-Resident Keralites (NoRKs) for the Pravasi Chitty of the Kerala State Financial Enterprises (KSFE) to mobilise funds\u00a0for the mammoth project.<\/p>\n
The Coastal Highway will cost Rs.4,000 crore. Apart from building a coastal highway government will also build a 1,195-km Hill Highway covering 13 districts except for Alappuzha.<\/p>\n
