English Author Manu S Pillai from Trivandrum was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2017 for his book titled \u2018The Ivory Throne- Chronicles of the House of Travancore\u2019.<\/p>\n
The young historian who hails from Trivandrum was only 25 when his book \u2018The Ivory Throne- Chronicles of the house of Travancore’ was published. The book is a result of his six and a half year long research in places ranging from London, Trivandrum, Delhi and Bangalore.<\/p>\n
In his book, Manu S Pillai tells the life of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bai, the queen who ruled Travancore between 1924 -1931. It gives us an insight of the unheard life and rare customs of the royal family.<\/p>\n
The 704-page book published by Harper Collins reveals the rise and fall of Queen Sethu Lakshmi Bai. She was called the Regent Rani as she came to the throne at the age of five ruling 5 million people. The book also tells us about the rare customs and the matrilineal system existed in the Travancore kingdom where King emerges from the sons of sisters of the king and not of the king, unlike other Indian kingdoms.<\/p>\n
Manu S Pillai spent 6 years ploughing through archives and records available at the Kerala State Archives, the National Archives in Delhi, British archives in London and even Maharani\u2019s personal papers in Bangalore where she spent the last years of her life.<\/p>\n
Manu S Pillai holds a master’s degree from King’s College and is the chief of staff to MP Shashi Tharoor and heads his operation in Delhi.
