Kochi Metro was hailed by everyone when they decided to employ transgender people as their ground staff. Now, KMRL authorities decided to offer accommodation to them at an affordable cost and provide conveyance free of cost.<\/p>\n
KMRL initially offered the job to 21 transgender people. However, only 12 of them joined. The major difficulties cited by the transgender people for joining Kochi Metro was the inability to find cheap accommodation, lack of transportation facilities and low wages compared to the workload. This promoted KMRL to provide them with accommodations.<\/p>\n

The basic income they receive is around Rs10,400 however, transgender people had to shell out Rs600 per day for renting rooms at the lodge. Many home owners are reluctant to give homes to transgender people, forcing them to stay on expensive lodges.<\/p>\n
Although they demanded a hike, KMRL denied any hike in wage instead they offered cheap accommodations and transportations free of cost.<\/p>\n

“We have identified a hostel run by nuns at Kakkanad for proving accommodation for the transgender employees. Kudumbashree would offer free transportation for them<\/em>,” an official with KMRL said.<\/p>\n
