With a system designed to composting organic waste right at the source, the corporation offers free equipment and maintenance services at a nominal price. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Residents\u2019 houses are being set up with composting facilities for which they will be receiving technical assistance. Local service providers offer three-layered bin and 30-litre coco peat-based inoculum. All this with a monthly service charge of Rs.200. As an extension to the disposal of bio-degradable waste, the system to dispose non bio-degradable waste has been simplified.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28311\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28311\" class=\"wp-image-28311 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2017\/10\/06dcTVM1jpg.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2017\/10\/06dcTVM1jpg.jpeg 660w, https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2017\/10\/06dcTVM1jpg-222x148.jpeg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Img source: The Hindu<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Recyclable items like plastic and cardboard can be dropped off at authorised centres and low-value waste at resource recovery facilities between 5 am and 9 pm. The plastics sent to Material Recover Facility are shredded down and utilised for tarring roads. In sync with the waste disposal practices, Kerala government has also implemented a GREEN PROTOCOL which aims at reducing the usage of non-bio-degradable goods. The GREEN PROTOCOL was enforced during Onam celebrations at Kanakakunnu Palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGreen technicians, as they are called, will provide monthly technical assistance as well as collect the compost if the resident does not require it. Service providers will collect only non-biodegradable waste from households. The monthly service charge is <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u20b9<\/span><span class=\"s1\">200,\u201d says Shibu, Director of Thanal, which provides technical consultancy to governments, institutions and communities on solid waste management and zero waste systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In case of commercial buildings, they enter into an accord with the City Corporation that they will make arrangements for their disposal of organic waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey must prove that they have a sound, Corporation-approved system in place. Alternatively, they can make an arrangement with outside agencies such as NGOs, local groups or individuals, to take away the organic waste.
