It all begins in a good thought, a good thought makes a good movie. And that thought becomes the script after a series of hard work that includes reading, re-reading, writing and re-writing. Then it is presented to the director, he absorbs it fully and converts that into visuals. He finalises the actors who can get into the skin of the characters, as the the script demands. Then comes the cinematographer, this person has to have the aesthetic capability of understanding the heart of the director. And then, he creates his frames, again according to the script. Next you need a sensible producer who understands what is cinema, to invest the money. A good movie is thus born. I am not forgetting the team behind production and post production. They are very important as well. But above mentioned elements are the raw materials for the post productions technicians and artists to work on.

Ayalum Njanum Thammil, the recent release by the well acclaimed and celebrated director Lal Jose, is a good example for whatever I said in the beginning.

The Script : First of all It has a well knit script. The script has a good beginning, suspense, twist, emotions, eyeopening moments and a very simple but good ending . The story line is very simple, Mr. Ravi Tharakan, a young, energetic, impulsive Junior Doctor whose life has changed by the influence of a senior Doctor Samuel who runs a small hospital in a remote village near Munnar, Kerala. Though the story line is simple the writers did a wonderful job in knitting all the elements neatly together which gives a different experience to the audience. Bobby Sanjay duo is back with a strong and lovely script.

Cinematography : A cinematographer should have the capability to understand the director’s heart and convert that into frames, again as the script demands. Jomon T John amazed me with his beautiful frames and colors which makes this movie a beautiful treat to watch. A colorful festival to the eyes. Well done bro!

Actors : All the actors in the movie were wonderful. Special congrats to Prithviraj for doning out such a mature performance. Amidst his flops and flaws, with this role, Prithvi walks back to the audience’ heart. Keep choosing such characters Prithvi, we have high hopes in you. The others, Narein, Samvritha, Rima Kallingal, Ramya Nambeesan, Kalabhavan Mani, Salimkumar, Sukumari, Premprekash, everyone justified their roles. But the star of the movie is Prathap Pothan. He was just brilliant. His performance as a committed doctor, and his fatherly love towards Dr. Ravi Tharakan was mind blowing and he just steals the show. He reminded me of Robin Williams in ‘Goodwill Hunting’ (1997). The storyline is almost the same and Robin Williams bagged an Oscar for enacting that character. I am just hoping Prathap Pothan will be honoured for this role as well.

The director : Lal Jose is a well celebrated and loved director of our industry. He has ben delivering very good entertainers during the last 12 years. To be frank, after watching his previous movies (specially Spanish Masala & Diamond necklace) I was doubting whether Lal Jose was loosing the charm, but he proved me wrong. He really deserves a big applause for the neat job. He proved that a director is the soul of a movie, the unseen thread which connects everything together. And Ayalum Njanum Thammil becomes one of my favourite movies of Lal Jose. Well done Sir!

Coming to the post production, Ouseppachan’s music is just apt for the movie and Renjan Abraham’s editing is commendable. Every other aspect of the movie turned out to be good and the credit for this surely goes out to the script . And definitely this is one of the the finest movies of our time.

My Rating : 7/10

Review by Abraham Joseph (Dreaming Nomads)

How does a good movie happen?
