To alter this situation, wireless automated signalling system was set up at the junction in April. But traffic blocks are still a common feature noticed at the junction.

The signal system at Vellayambalam works on the basis of vehicle density. That is the roads having more traffic will get more ‘green’ time and less ‘red’ time compared to roads with lesser vehicles. In spite of this most modern arrangement, due to the unlawful parking, the size of the traffic island and unscientific designs of bus stops, traffic woes continue at the junction. The recommendation to relocate the bus stop away from the traffic island in the Sasthamangalam-Kowdiar route has not yet been implemented. Vehicles wishing to take the free-left are blocked by the buses halting at the bus stand. Even when the signal turns green, vehicles are unable to move forward due to these buses.

For motorists traveling to Vazhuthakad, the problem is caused by unlawful parking. Cars parked along the roadside play villain here. The free-left facility is denied to these motorists due to this. The bus stop, on the route leading to Museum, near Keltron is the only one that has been designed scientifically. Traffic jams do not plague this path because of the existence of the bus bay. It has been reportedly said that supposing other bus stops are also designed in this fashion, traffic congestion will cease to exist.

About 33% of the vehicles approaching the traffic circle makes use of the free-left facility. Only the rest are dependent on the traffic signals. If free-left is allowed to be taken without difficulty then studies suggest that about 15% of the traffic will get reduced.

As per the international regulations, an island connecting four 2-lane roads must have at least the area occupied by four lanes. Supposing the area of the traffic island is reduced, these regulations might get satisfied. In addition to all this, free-left dividers have not been set up in any of the approach roads. Installing these should be given top priority as absence of the same can only augment the traffic woes.

Attakulangara junction is also facing similar problems. Limited area of land, large number of cars and unscientific means of constructing the roads are the reasons behind the traffic problems here. Unlawful parking is another issue. The vehicles taking the path leading from Manacaud to East fort are the ones stuck in the traffic knots for long.

Vellayambalam was one of the junctions at Thiruvananthapuram that was party to frequent traffic jams.
