If the motor vehicles department implements the government&#8217;s initiatives to earn additional revenue, multiple vehicle owners may have to pay a surcharge.Proposals are also on to increase the luxury tax on vehicles and a one time tax payment for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the departments of the State, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keralamvd.gov.in\/\" target=\"_blank\">Motor Vehicles Department<\/a> is one of the largest generators of revenue. In 2010-11, it generated Rs 1,265.41 crore registering an increase of about 15.61% compared to the year 2009-10. If the new measures go on floor then the revenue will increase considerably.<\/p>\n<p>On paper, these proposals seem optimum to gain extra funds. But the practicability of these measures is under the shadow of doubt. People might easily be able to get round the surcharge rule by registering their vehicles in the names of family members or friends.<\/p>\n<p>Again, since currently the one time registration is for a period of 15 years, altering this requires the amendment of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 1976. The luxury tax is already high and hiking it further might not be very feasible.<\/p>\n<p>Increasing the revenue is obviously good but introducing unpractical measures for the same will not do any good for the government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Possession of more than one vehicle may cause you to cough up more tax to the government.
