The emission figures of the garbage disposal system is far below the limit set by the Pollution Control Board.

Waste accumulated behind the Palayam fish market is being tended to now. The Suchitwa mission officials believe that once the system starts operation, people will soon grow less suspicious of it and will quit protesting against the system.

The gases released from the system is five times less than the prescribed limit. Burning chambers and cyclone separators are present to handle the waste loaded. Also separate quench systems and scrubbers would make sure that the emission of gases such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide remain below the maximum value.

The machine was purchased by Small Industries Development Corporation. The 42 metre long incinerator has a stack of 11 metres and handles both bio-degradable and plastic wastes. The unit can treat even one tonne of waste in an hour. It can be operational for about 8 to 16 hours.

Questions have however been raised about the economic feasibility of the machine. It requires about 70 litres of diesel to burn the waste and produce electricity to run the parts of the disposal machine. The moisture content of the waste added is also important. More moisture content adds up to more fuel requirement.

The machine performed perfectly during trials. But the working is closely monitored by a committee constituted by the government. The committee members are representatives of Suchitwa Mission. Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), Pollution Control Board, a mechanical expert from the Public Works Department and the Corporation Engineer.

The ash which will end up as the end product of the incinerator will be tested for quality and be supplied to brick and cement making units.

Trial run of the new mobile incinerator has begun in the Capital city.
