Pappu Zebra, the Road Sense mascot of Kerala Police Traffic Wing<\/strong> will be making a return in the second phase of road safety programme this Friday. As a part of \u2018Pappu Zebra – Road Sense Programme\u2019, books on road safety will be given to school students. The road sense books are prepared by artist Nandan Pillai – the creator of ‘Pappu’, are given free of cost. Pappu the Zebra was launched in June 2009 by the traffic police and immediately became a huge success.<\/p>\n

Hiking the number of\u00a0road accidents in Kerala<\/strong>\u00a0is not just because of the careless driving by the drivers but the wretched condition of roads. Though the numbers of accidents are increasing, the concerned authorities so far did not show any interest in renovate such roads sufficiently. In the list published by the state police issued for exhibiting causes of road accidents, the pitiable condition of roads coming at sixth place. Though the authorities did not recognise bad road condition is one of the important reason for accidents people understand the real problem. That is why a great number of organisations, political parties and public\u2019s representatives came to the fore front of agitation demanding immediate renovation of such roads irrespective of political parties.<\/p>\n

Kerala Police Road Safety Unit<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Kerala Public Workers Department has instituted a road safety unit to bring down the number of accidents. But it is a fact that the works of the unit is not satisfactory. The unit that is constituted under the chief Engineer, an executive engineer, two assistant executive engineers and assistant engineers are under the doubt that they are working properly.<\/p>\n

Its activities include Black spot improvement programme,\u00a0road safety audit<\/a>, marking of demonstration signs, junction improvement schemes, mass action schemes, safety improvement of hazardous locations in NH 14 and 17, Safety assessment of RMC roads and road accident database.<\/p>\n

But the question remains whether this unit is working sufficiently enough for the wellbeing of roads as well as the public.<\/strong><\/p>\n
