Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a new directive that tightens subscriber verification norms. According to the new directive from DoT, new applications (Customer Acquisition Forms) for post-paid\/pre-paid mobile connection are thoroughly screened and new SIM cards can only be issued if they pass all the criteria mentioned by the DoT.<\/p>\n
The tightening of subscriber verification norms by DoT is to prevent bogus mobile connections, after a directive issued by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has asked the constitution of an expert panel to formulate procedures for identifying subscribers before a SIM is issued.<\/p>\n
As per the latest DoT guidelines, the subscriber has to present at the Point of Sale (PoS) along with documents supporting both proof of identity and residence proof, so that the authorized dealer can verify the documents. Phone verification is also carried out after a subscriber has fulfilled requirements at the dealer level.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt may be ensured that while making the calls for tele-verification, details may be asked from the subscriber and verified against the details provided in the database. It may also be ensured that unless tele-verified, the subscriber is not able to make any type of call, except to the operator. The incoming call will remain barred before tele-verification.\u201d DoT states.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the retail dealers issued pre-activated SIMs as soon as a subscriber fills in an application form.<\/p>\n
\u201cActivation of SIM which was initially at the first stage of customer-operator interface has now been pushed to the final stage,\u201d an industry spokesman said.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not just the new connections, existing cellular database are also being cleaned up and bogus connections are deactivated and removed. According to the reports from Cellular Operators Association of India, growth in mobile subscriber has been in the negative since July, when 206Lac users were removed, followed by 51Lacs in August and 17Lac in September.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
