The doyen in Sitar Pandit Ravi Shankar passed away in San Diego, California in the United States on Tuesday at 4.30 pm. He was 92. The legendary musician was admitted at the Scripps Memorial Hospital after he complained of breathing difficulties on December 6.<\/p>\n
Pandit Ravi Shankar was awarded with India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1999. He also received three Grammy Awards. The sitar maestro was an active professional musician till the end and was one of the contenders for the next Grammys.<\/p>\n
The maestro is survived by his wife Sukanya and daughters sitar player Anushka Shankar and singer Norah Jones. Both his wife Sukanya and daughter Anushka was by his side when he breathed his last.<\/p>\n
Pandit Ravi Sankar was born in Varanasi on April 7, 1920 as Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury and was referred by the title Pandit. Ravi Shankar spend his youth with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar later gave up dancing to study sitar under court musician Allauddin Khan.<\/p>\n
Ravi Shankar began his European and American tour from 1956 and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison of ‘The Beatles’ spread the popularity of Indian classical music world wide.<\/p>\n
In a joint statement by Ravi Shankar’s wife and daughter said, \u201cWe know that you all feel our loss with us, and we thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes through this difficult time. Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we were able to have him as a part of our lives. His spirit and his legacy will live on forever in our hearts and in his music.\u201d<\/p>\n
