Curtains have gone up on India’s first-ever Biennale at Kochi. It is an international art exhibition that will occupy Kochi for the next three months.<\/p>\n

The aim of the event is to help make the Indian art scene more \u00a0focused on art rather than on market. The organizers hope that it will become a hub to launch talks on art. The 3 month long extravaganza will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at 5.30pm at parade grounds, Fort Kochi.<\/p>\n

A concert by British musician and artist, M.I.A will feature in the opening ceremony. M.I.A who had base in India sometime back is expected to draw a huge crowd.<\/p>\n

Fashioned in the Venice biennale model, an exhibition where countries sent their most talented artists, the Kochi-Muziris biennale is on a smaller scale. About 80 artists from India and abroad will grace the occasion. Some of the big names include Ariel Hassan(Argentina), Amanullah Mojadidi (Afghanistan) , Wangechi Mutu( Africa) and Zhang Enli (China). Bihar born Subodh Gupta and Atul Dodiya are the prominent Indian names to be present.<\/p>\n

Most of the works are inspired by the history of Kochi. The spice hub of India went into the hands of the Portuguese, the Dutch and then became a princely state of the British. Today many religious denominations co- exist here thus giving it the multi-cultural shade.\u00a0This according to the organisers images Kochi the best city to host the biennale.<\/p>\n

Aspinwall House where goods like ginger, pepper and tea were traded in the 19th century will be noted due to its similarity to Venice’s Arsenale. \u00a0Aspinwall House is one of the key exhibition grounds.<\/p>\n

Italian artist Giuseppe Stampone is participating in the show with a work ” The Perfect World, Bye Bye Europa” an autorickshaw modeled into a car of a European diplomat.<\/p>\n

Since this is the peak tourist season, the organizers expect about \u00a05,00,000 people to attend the exhibition.<\/p>\n

Blanketed in funding issues and allegations of financial irregularities, the event was in jeopardy till very recently. Though the local government is no longer funding it, the government has shown support for the exhibition.\u00a0The extravaganza which opened on 12-12-12 will go on till 13-3-13.<\/p>\n
