White balls playing in a bucket of hot water attracted me and the curiosity vanished when I read the stall name ‘Silk Mark Organisation of India‘. The white balls are the cocoons and I got the opportunity to weave silk threads!

The woman in me allured by the name ‘silk’ went to the stall and inquired and I got information quite new to me and which I wish to share with my silk-loving friends. Seeing me interested, Mr. Johny the Technical Assistant showed a book of cut clothes asked me to find which one is the original silk-I touched, I rubbed, I cuddled and failed to find the original one. Mr. Johny then took a lighter and burned three different types of clothes-polyester, cotton and then silk. The polyester melted and cotton was burned. When silk was lighted, it burned slowly leaving a black residue which crumbled easily with finers and felt like sand and it smelt just like burning hair.

Silk, the undisputed queen in the textile industry has the glamour like no other. Our traditionally skilled artisans create poetries through the intrinsic designs, inimitable images and vibrant colours. Poor heat conduction and low static current generation makes it warm in winter and cool in summer. Its natural sheen, delightful textures, inherent sophistication and excellent drape imparts it the magnificence which no other fiber can substitute.

There are four types of silks mulberry, tasar, eri and muga but according to Mr. Johny there is only one type that is pure silk. This classical silk fibre has been facing unfair competition from unscrupulous manufacturers and traders of cheaper man-made substitutes, which they pass on to consumers a pure natural silk, depriving genuine consumers and stake. So to stop this menace the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India launched ‘Silk Mark’, quality assurance label which signifies that the product to which it is affixed is made of pure silk.

The ‘Silk Mark’ has a high security e-beam hologram having concealed features for maximum security. These labels are numbered and coded in such a way that every label can be identified for its Authorised User, the period of use etc.

So the next time you go and buy any material in silk, assure it has the ‘Silk Mark‘.
