Recently the internet giant has come up with yet another innovation named “Project Glass”. Project Glass is one of the most hyped and anticipated projects from Google. Google always try to push the limits of our technology and “Project Glass” is no exception.

So what exactly is Project Glass?

As the name suggests, “Project Glass” is actually a pair of Glasses. Not just any Glasses, it’s a wearable computer. A smart pair of Glasses with a heads up display integrated with augmented reality. Wearable computers are not a new thing to the world. But Google is taking this concept to a whole new level. According to Google, the Project Glass will help you to “explore and share your world”. While Google is keeping “Project Glass” tightly wrapped, several googlers working on this project have been on “Google Plus Hangouts” recently. This gives us a glimpse about the device and a rough idea of how this work and what all things it can do. Couple of weeks back Google made the Project Glass available to the developers

Hardware

The hardware of Project Glass is getting altered as it is tested and fine tuned. According to a recent hangout in Google plus, It is said that hardware of Project Glass is very similar to “Samsung Galaxy Nexus” without radio communcations. A project member quotes “It is basically a Wi-Fi galaxy nexus”.

Google Mentioned that Glass has a powerful CPU and lots of RAM. It also contains an accelerometer, gyroscope, a mic for voice commands, and wireless radio for data input, a speaker and a camera. Since everything is placed above your line of vision, it will not interfere with your vision.

One of the components that are heavily updated is the camera used in the device. Not much is known about the camera. Many shots taken by the “Glass” is posted in Google plus. It is also confirmed that there will not be any removable storage media. The only port the “Glass “has is a microUSB port to charge the device. People who got hands on experience of “Glass” at Google I/O 2012 said, the experience of the head mounted display is not all that different from those bulky head mount displays. The users reported that the device makes sound. Glass has no in-ear component. You may have to cup your hands over your ear, to hear loudly and clearly. On the bright side the “Google Glass” incredibly light and weighs same as that of your normal sun Glasses. It can also be worn over your Glasses.

Software

Glass will be highly depending on internet for most of its function and Google haven’t mentioned anything about its offline mode. Surprisingly Glass will not be running Android or at least not the Android as we know it. Operating System of the Glass is still a big secret. During the Google I/O 2012 project members demonstrated Google Plus hangout and they were completely capable of communicating with each other as if they are using mobile app. Project Glass will be based on Open Source software so that developers can use Project Glass for specific purpose development.

Navigation

Glass can be controlled using touchpad placed on the side of the device. Different swipe gestures on the track pad controls basic navigation of the Glass. There is also a single button placed on top of device. It serves as the action button for everything else you do while wearing the Glass. A quick jerk up with your heads turns off the device and it goes into sleep mode. You need to press the action button on the side to turn it back on. Not much is known about the gesture controls.

With “Project Glass” Google is hoping to make the information quickly accessible to the users. We have seen many companies trying to impress us with gadgets, but Project Glass seems to be the most successful in this category. After all you don’t need to this take off. Project Glass is still far away from mass production. If you are impatient, you can actually pre-order an explorer edition of the Glass for 1,500$ which is about 80,000 Rupees. It can be said without any doubt that “Glass” is the latest in the line of innovation coming from Google. Glass will surely find itself at the top of wish list of the tech savvy generation. After iPad and iPhone, Google’s “Project Glass” is going to be the nest gadget to become part of our style statement.

Google has a long history of surprising us with many innovations and technologies.
