‘The Guardian<\/em><\/strong>‘ one of the most popular news paper in UK has called Varkala – the new Goa<\/strong>. Varkala and its Ayurvedic options bagged the 8th place, in the Guardian’s list of “30 of the best bargain adventures in 2013<\/strong>“. Surfing and photography in Costa Rica and Trans-Siberian rail in Russia holds first and second positions respectively. Varkala comes after Sri Lanka, Cambodia, America, Lanzarote, Spain and South Korea. Other places in the list include South Africa, Australia, Bali, Mexico, Egypt, Japan etc.<\/p>\n

This is the first time in a decade that ‘The Guardian<\/a>” is giving importance to a destination in Kerala<\/a>. Back in 2001, the news paper included Kovalam and Trivandrum City in it\u2019s ‘Must go’ List. The Guardian’s list is considered as a major boost to tourism in Kerala, as English travellers form the majority of international tourists coming to Kerala. In 2011, English travellers constituted 26.5% of the International travellers arriving to the state. United States were the second with 13 percent.<\/p>\n

Some are in the opinion that the emergence of Varkala<\/a> as a prime tourist destination is a threat to Kovalam. \u201cUsually, Kovalam<\/a> is seen as the gateway to Kerala.
