The ‘Java exploit’, exploits the vulnerability left open in Java 7 Update 10, which was released in October 2012. The exploit works by forcing users to visit a malicious website that takes advantage of a security flaw to take control of the users’ computer. Once the hacker takes over victim’s computer, victim will have to pay to have control of their computers returned from the hacker’s grasp.

When the Update 10 was released, Oracle said it is “strongly recommended” that users update to receive “key security features and bug fixes.”Oracle hasn’t specified the number of users who have downloaded Java 7 Update 10. However Java runs on more than 850 million computers and other devices all over the world.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a warning advising users to disable Java until a fix is discovered. Apple has disabled Java in response to the threat.
