With the failure of two consecutive monsoons in our state, scarcity of water is a worrying factor, if the reports in the media are to be believed. The time has come to think seriously about water conservation or else availability of water will be a major concern in the coming days.<\/p>\n

To specifically address this issue, Communication Capacity Development Unit (CCDU),\u00a0has been formed under the Water Resources Department of Government of India. Dr. Subhash Chandra Bose, Director of CCDU<\/strong> in an interview with EnteCity.com<\/a> shares his thoughts about water conservation and its allied aspects.<\/p>\n

Tell us something about the major activities of CCDU?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CCDU focuses mainly on two aspects namely Information Education and Communication (IEC) and Human Resource Development (HRD). Under IEC, we handle everything relating to water quality, quantity, rain water harvesting, ground water recharge and proper usage of water. As regards HRD, we aim to educate and empower people like students, farmers, engineers and so on.<\/p>\n

What programmes have been formulated to achieve your goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are imparting training to people at Panchayat level. Further, we have formed \u2018JalaShree Clubs<\/strong>\u2019 in all colleges and schools across the state to create awareness. Workshops and seminars are also being conducted as a part of this.<\/p>\n

Can you be more specific about the field works done?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are supplying field kits for free to all Panchayats for testing the quality of water. For this, we impart training to NRHM<\/a> and ASHA workers and give advice on conduct of quality test. Through this, we plan to achieve the aim of assuring good drinking water, quality wise and quantity wise in rural areas.<\/p>\n

What is the effective method you recommend for water conservation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Without doubt, rain water harvesting is the ideal method for conserving water in our state. Rainwater is the most pure form of drinking water. We strive to spread this message among the public and we also provide the structures necessary. Our primary concern is to create awareness on rainwater harvesting and along with that we also provide technical support and a little bit of financial support.<\/p>\n

Why is water conservation a serious concern now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Until 1970, availability of water was not at all an issue for us. In the ensuing years, our state witnessed a change in development activities, construction etc. Large areas of forests have been destroyed to make way for these constructions. Farming techniques also underwent changes and plantation crops like rubber gained preference. All these factors contributed to climate change, depletion of ground water and acute scarcity of quality drinking water. Industrial activities also led to pollution of our water bodies.<\/p>\n

What are the other effective measures you recommend for this problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our state is on the verge of a major drought. People should be made conscious of the seriousness of the problem. Strict laws need to be implemented for preventing misuse of water and to create awareness among the people.<\/p>\n

How do you plan to get your message across?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We use various channels for spreading our message among the public such as Ads in TV<\/a> and radio, Display of posters and banners and exhibitions. We also make use of social media like Facebook. \u00a0Our aim is to impart information in a simplified manner so that they reach the common man effectively.<\/p>\n
