Police have come up with a new solution, to tackle the speedsters and to put an end to the street racing. Active magnetic sensors placed 2.54 cm below the road surface and connected to the surveillance cameras will soon help the cops identify motorists who exceeds the legal speed limit.<\/p>\n
The sensors will be placed on 6 \u201cmost accident-prone\u201d roads in the State. Kovalam-Kottiyam (61 km), Venjaranmoodu-Chengannur (93 km),Alappuzha-Chengannur (24 km), Thrissur-Kuttippuram (60 km), Palakkad-Malappuram (90 km) road and Sakthikulangara-Ambalapuzha (69 km).<\/p>\n
A police team headed by State Police Chief K.S. Balasubramanian; ADGP P. Chandrasekharan; and IG Manoj Abraham had analyzed road accidents in Kerala since 2011 and found the 6 roads to be the \u201cmost accident prone\u201d.<\/p>\n
The new system consists of 2 sensors and overhead surveillance cameras which will be installed at an interval of 7 km. The magnetic sensors will be placed 1.2M apart. The system can calculate the speed of the vehicle in less than a millisecond by gauging the time it took to pass over the 2 sensors. If the vehicle exceeds the speed limit, the surveillance cameras will pick up its number plate. The night vision-equipped cameras will capture images of the entire vehicles passing through the road and store the data up to 30 days.<\/p>\n
The centralized control room at the Police Training College at Trivandrum<\/strong> will monitor the system round-the-clock. The project is part of \u201cintelligent traffic and law enforcement system\u201d and will cover all major roads and junctions in the State within 3 years.
