The summer season is round the corner and reports of rapid drying up of Peppara dam indicate a crisis to the city dwellers. The water level in Peppara dam which is the chief source of drinking water in the city is dropping steadily.If care is not taken to restrict water consumption, the city will face acute water shortage by the month of May. As it is, the coastal areas and elevated areas have already started feeling the pinch.<\/p>\n

Reports say that Peppara dam contain water sufficient for only 90days or so. The authorities are banking on the summer rain which if ample, can improve the situation.<\/p>\n

Towards the end of last year, when water scarcity was felt, government had thought about bringing water from Neyyar Dam and also allotted Rs 3 crore towards the project. Fortunately, the city received significant rainfall and the project was temporarily dropped. But it seems that the project needs to be revived urgently.Already the pipes are in place and the project can be completed within a month. Water sufficient to last 50 days can be diverted from Neyyar Dam and the city can survive till the rainy season.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Forest Department also had mooted the idea of raising the water level of Peppara dam up to 3M. With the commissioning of JICA the present capacity will not be sufficient. With the drought posing an alarming picture, the observation of CCDU under Water resource department<\/strong> becomes very much relevant. The CCDU focuses primarily on water conservation and means for overcoming drought situations. They also give priority to preservation of existing water bodies without polluting them.<\/p>\n
