We are relying on the three rainy seasons (Edvapathi, Thulavarsham and Venal Mazha) to tide over the drought like situation. If the rains fail as happened in the previous seasons, the scenario will look very grim indeed.

Dr. Subash Chandra Bose of CCDU under Water Resource Department says there is an urgent need to think of measures to overcome the drought. The first priority should be given to preserving the existing water bodies without polluting them. Here, people have a tendency to dispose of waste including animal waste conveniently to the nearest river or lake. Such practices need to be stopped. Also care should be taken to keep our wells clean.

“Water conservation a top priority” says CCDU Director Dr. Subhash Chandra Bose

In summer, people should refrain from wasting precious water unnecessarily on cleaning cars, houses and watering the garden. We should also learn to conserve the rain water effectively. People often complain against the government during such moments of crisis. But it’s time that we also take responsibility and take initiatives for saving our state from the verge of drought.

“We should not take everything in nature for granted. To know nature and live by its rules should be our mantra” says Dr. Subash Chandra Bose

With today’s urgency to solve safe water issues, there is too much emphasis on immediate reactions and short-term fixes. Sustainable water conservation requires time, creativity, and innovation.
