BEVCO’s first self-service premium outlet opened in Trivandrum

To woo its high-end customers, Kerala State Beverages Corporation Ltd. (BEVCO) has opened its first premium liquor outlet with self-help counters in Trivandrum.

The government decided to launch high-end liquor outlets after it was found that BEVCO is losing considerable revenue from its premium customers who are not interested in waiting in long queues and under the gaze of onlookers to buy their bottles. These customers often go to the bar and pay a higher price for the drink than wait in the queue. In high-end liquor outlets customers can walk in and select any brand of their choice.

The premium liquor shop is located at the first floor of BEVCO outlet on the Ulloor-Akkulam road. Only rum priced above Rs. 500 a bottle, and brandy and whisky with a price tag of Rs.700 and above will be sold through the self-help outlets. Beer is sold at Rs100 and above while Wine starts at Rs600. The premium outlet is air-conditioned and spreads over an area of around 1000 sq ft. It expects a sale of around Rs. 1.2 lakh and 160 customers a day.

Soon such posh liquor outlets will be opened in Kochi and Kozhikode. Going by the government policy not to open any new liquor outlets, BEVCO will open these on existing shops where space is available.

The BEVCO sells around 3,000 liquor brands, barring tequila and breezers that are not permitted in Kerala under the existing liquor policy. The posh liquor outlet is expected to meet the requirements of customers who opt for premium brands.
