The centre pursues research in areas such as aeronautics, avionics, composites etc. VSSC which was originally named as Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) became operational on November 21, 1963 with the successful launching of a two-stage sounding rocket, ‘Nike-Apache’. After the death of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the centre was renamed as Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre

Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre is the facility which focuses in the area of Liquid Propulsion for ISRO’s Launch Vehicle and Spacecraft programmes.  LPSC headquarters is located at Valiamala. Earth Storable, Cryogenic and Semi-cryogenic Propulsion Systems for Launch Vehicle and Spacecraft Propulsions System design and architecture, Management of system projects, Earth Storable & Cryogenic Engine and stage systems and Integration of Launch Vehicle Propulsion Control System packages and Modules are carried out at LPSC facility at Valiamala, Trivandrum.

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST Trivandrum)

IIST Trivandrum is a premier institute under ISRO dedicated for space research. IIST is Asia’s first Space Institute and the first in the world to offer graduate programmes with focus to space science, technology and applications. The centre offers undergraduate (B.Tech.), master’s (M.Tech.) and Ph.D. programs in space science and technology, and also serves as a research center. Doctoral programmes in basic sciences and post-doctoral programmes are also offered.
