Action Hero Biju Malayalam Movie Review – A Realistic, Subtle Movie

Nivin Pauly carries the movie in his shoulder. This is the first time the actor is playing the role of a police officer but Nivin was able to portray it perfectly throughout the movie.

Nivin Pauly’s latest outing, Action Hero Biju has hit the theatres. It is one of the much-awaited films in Malayalam this year as Nivin and Abrid have joined hands again after their hit ‘1983’, which won many accolades in 2014.

‘A ride with a police officer’, that’s the tag line of Action Hero Biju and the film shows exactly that. The movie shows a realistic portrayal of a police officer’s life, in contrast to the macho appearance seen usually in action movies. It shows a different aspect of policing which we haven’t seen much in Malayalam.

Synopsis

Nivin Pauly plays the title role, Sub Inspector Biju Paulose, an officer in a Janamaithri Police Station. The nature of his job brings a drastic change in his life and personality. What happens in Biju’s life forms the crux of the plot.

We have seen many action movies in Malayalam where a committed police officer have to battle a ‘Big Boss’ with a flavour of revenge and betrayal. But Action Hero Biju is entirely different from the stereotypical action film. The movie shows a series of cases of various kinds from job fraud to extra marital affairs where our hero has to investigate. Thus it shows us the routine life of a police officer. This makes Action Hero Biju an interesting movie to watch.

The script, jointly written by Abrid and Muhammed Shafeeq, perfectly combines the commoner and heroic aspects of Biju. It doesn’t stick to a single storyline. Like the movie’s tagline it follows the protagonist. The screenplay succeeds in connecting each story. The elements such as humour, sentiments and irony all are mixed into the story very perfectly. However, the climax was a bit of a let-down.

Nivin Pauly carries the movie in his shoulder. This is the first time the actor is playing the role of a police officer but Nivin was able to portray it perfectly throughout the movie. Casting Nivin Pauly was indeed a good decision. Anu Emmanuel plays a minimal role as Benita, Biju’s fiancée and shares a good chemistry with Nivin. The supporting cast, including Saiju Kurup, Major Ravi, Kochu Preman, Joju George, Prajod Kalabhavan, Valsala Menon etc perfectly play their parts.

Cinematography from debutant Alex J Pulickal is impressive. The highly natural visualisation helps Biju in being real. Jerry Amaldev’s tunes are truly magical. The minimal BGM from Rajesh Murgesan once again amazes the audience.

Verdict

Action Hero Biju is a very simple movie which has a thin storyline but portrays it in the most sensible way possible. It’s a fun-filled movie that shows the life of a police officer in the most realistic way. If you are looking for humor and sentiments minus the company of punch dialogues then Action Hero Biju will never disappoint you, but if you are looking for an in-depth story line, then this is not for you.
