Idukki Gold Movie Review by Shyam

Idukki Gold is simple but lacks a thick plot. The movie is all about revising their memories and immersing in nostalgia.

Aashiq Abu’s much awaited movie Idukki Gold has hit the theatres today. The movie is based on Santhosh Echikkanam’s short story of the same name. Idukki Gold has nothing to do with the yellow metal and is the name of a secret code.

Idukki Gold is the story of 5 friends and their reunion. The five friends who studied together in a school in Idukki in the 70s. They went their separate ways after school and have not met each other since. Now one of them, an NRI Michael played by Pratap Pothen, has returned and placed an advertisement in the newspaper in a bid to locate his old friends. The ad works and they meet up and decide to go for a trip in Idukki. Other four friends are Madan (Maniyanpillai Raju), Antony (Babu Antony), Ravi (Ravindran) and Raman (Vijayaraghavan).

Idukki Gold is simple but lacks a thick plot. The movie is all about revising their memories and immersing in nostalgia. While the first half is interesting and funny in parts, the second half is long and drags a bit.

Idukki Gold has so many repetitive drinking scenes with no logic whatsoever. The script is also repetitive and you can relate some scenes to ‘Salt N Pepper‘. The over usage of usual dialogues along with drinking has become a cliché.  You may become fed up with the run of the mill twists and turns.

Pratap Pothen, Maniyanpillai Raju, Babu Antony, Ravindran and Vijayaraghavan have all done their jobs well even though they have nothing to contribute. Cinematography of Shyju Khalid is remarkable and was able to capture Idukki with all its beauty.

If you like ‘Da Thadiya‘ and all the usual elements of a “new generation” film, then you will find Idukki Gold enjoyable.

Verdict: Average Flick
Rating: 7 / 10
